Belle stood and clapped. “He’s so old-fashioned, but it’s hard not to love him,” she said, flush-faced, her face powder studded with sweat.

Then, in a striped suit and boater, Danny Swarms soft-shoed onto the boards. The blowzy band struck up a tune. Twirling his cane expertly, he knocked his hat at a rakish angle, did a quick pirouette, and danced toward the wings.

“It’s him, it’s Danny!” Belle gasped.

Leaning at an insouciant angle, Swarms tapped his way back to center stage and launched into a song.
